Mereworth Village Walking Group – 10am Tuesday 23rd Sept 2025
Our September walk is a ramble around the hedgerows, shaws and tolls that stitch together the countryside between North Tonbridge, Hildenborough and Shipbourne.
It is a leisurely walk with several stiles, some gentle slopes and one slightly steeper slope -but not too bad! It is 4.3 miles/7.4 km and will take just over 2 hours.
This walk takes in some beautiful open fields, shady woodland and a variety of trees and hedgerows and in September we should see plenty of sloes. There are also some interesting historical points of interest along the way.
Our meeting point is outside St Margaret Clitheroes School in Trench Road, Tonbridge. The school is right at the far end of Trench Road and is a dead end. There is on street parking in Trench Road or in Greenfrith Drive, we will exit our walk onto Quincewood Gardens, which is just off Greenfrith Drive so you may want to park somewhere in between. There is also parking just off Greenfrith Drive on Pine Ridge (first left). Please arrive in time for our briefing before we set off at 10am.

Mereworth Village Walking Group: 2pm Tuesday 21st October 2025
October’s walk will take a last look at some areas of farmland that will soon be developed for housing. It will begin at 2pm on Tuesday 21st October at the Kings Hill end of the old Teston Road (opposite the North Pole pub), about 10 minutes’ drive from Mereworth. There is plenty of free parking on the roadside. We will walk down to the North Pole pub and continue down Livesey Street to North Lodge. From there we shall head north through woodland paths up a short moderate slope to North Pole Road. Crossing this quiet road we shall head down to the crossroads at Sweets Lane. After a short stretch of Sweets Lane we shall walk north on the straight path through open farmland to Rocks Road, East Malling. Taking the footpath that crosses the railway line we shall, by popular request, again visit the archaeological excavations of the East Malling Roman religious sanctuary. Our route then goes through East Malling village, along Mill Street to the footpath that takes us under the railway to the former cress beds of Well Street. Passing by the mediaeval buildings that grace Well Street, we shall walk a short way along The Heath, before taking the wide footpath south to our starting point on Teston Road. The walk will take about two hours and is just short of five miles. It will involve some walking on quiet roads, and some gentle prolonged slopes. Some paths may be uneven and possibly muddy, and good walking boots are advisable. Dogs will be welcome but will need a lead on the roads.
