Mereworth Village Walking Group: 2pm Tuesday 24th June 2025

Just a few days after the summer solstice at 2pm on Tuesday 24th June our walk will take us to the 6,000-year-old Coldrum Stones at Trottiscliffe (pronounced Trosley). The car park for the stones is about 20 minutes or 5 miles from Mereworth. Please car share if you are able, as the car park has only 10 spaces, some of which may be already be taken. We will start the walk by taking the path from the car park to Trottiscliffe Church. The church has some interesting features, including an ornate 18th Century pulpit acquired from Westminster Abbey. Once we have looked around the church, we shall take the gentle incline from Trosley Court up to the prehistoric Pilgrims’ Way. This ancient road has some wonderful views across the Vale of Holmesdale to the Greensand Ridge.

After a mile or so along the Pigrims’Way we shall drop down the moderate slope to Park Farm and take the quiet lane to the road junction at Ryarsh Wood. We shall walk through the wood to the Wealdway, and from there to the Long Barrow at Coldrum – the best preserved of all the Medway Megaliths. We shall spend some time looking at this fascinating monument, in which Britain’s first farmers were buried, before taking the footpath back to the car park.

From Mereworth the best route is via Seven Mile Lane and Ford Lane, past the George Inn and then via School Lane and Church Lane to the car park off Pinesfield Lane. The roads are very narrow in places. With the two historic sites to visit the walk could take up to two hours, but is less than four miles in total. It has some moderately challenging slopes and the only road walking will be on very quiet lanes. The footpaths are in reasonably good condition, but if it has rained, they may be slippery. Dogs should be kept on leads for the road and garden sections of this walk.

Mereworth Village Walking Group: 10am Tuesday 22nd July 2025

Our July walk starts at 10am on Tuesday 22nd July at the free car park where Forstal Road meets Station Road opposite the recreation ground in Aylesford village. This is about 20 minutes’ drive from Mereworth. There is ample parking at one of two car parks, and on the roads nearby. We will begin by walking through Aylesford village to the church before setting off across the recreation ground to a short stretch of Forstal Road. Crossing Forstal Road, we shall take the alleyway opposite Beddow Way to the River Medway towing path. This is a haven of rural England in an otherwise urban area. We shall follow the path to Alllington lock where we shall see the Malta Inn and Allington Castle before crossing the Medway. From the lock, we shall take the footpath along the Medway, past the old quarries and over the motorway before walking through Little Preston and across the railway back to the Medway path. The path will take us back to Aylesford and our starting point. For those who wish to stay on, there are some good pubs in Aylesford. The walk will take about two hours at most and is just over 5km long. It will involve some road walking, but is mainly on the flat. Some paths may be uneven in place. There is no livestock on the walk but dogs will need a lead on the roads.

Mereworth Village Walking Group: 2pm Tuesday 26th August 2024

We begin our August walk at 2pm on Tuesday 26th August at Teston Bridge Country Park, about 10 minutes’ drive from Mereworth. The car park requires payment. We will walk from there across Teston Bridge to the road that leads towards Tutsham Hall. We shall, however, then take the footpath off this towards West Farleigh. Turning west from this footpath, we shall cross the horse paddocks south of Tutsham to emerge onto Hunt Street. After a short stretch of this narrow lane, we shall take the footpath over the fields near Shingle Barn through Henhurst Wood to the single-track lane known as Small Profits. During the walk there will be excellent views of what William Cobbett described as “the finest seven miles that I have ever seen in England or anywhere else.” We shall then follow Small Profits to where it joins Hunt Street, and cross onto the footpaths that take us down to the Medway at Bow Bridge. From there we shall follow the Medway towing path back to Teston Lock and the starting point. There will be many interesting historical features on the way, including the Teston linseed mill, possible Roman quarries and the unusual earthworks at Henhurst Wood. The walk will take about two hours and is about 6km long. It will involve some road walking and has some steady prolonged slopes. Some paths may be uneven and overgrown; good walking boots and nettle-proof trousers are advisable. There will be horses loose on the footpaths around Tutsham, and dogs will need a lead both there and on the roads.
